Refurbishing Your Day Hospital

Are you and your team on schedule with meeting your new compliance requirements?

If you’re thinking of refurbishing your day hospital, it’s important to be aware of the changes to the current quality health standards that will come into effect in the coming months.

From January 2019 all licensed healthcare facilities, including day hospitals need to comply with the second edition of the National Safety Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS).  As you are likely aware the number of Standards has been changed from 10 to 8 as well.

A significant change which has been in progress since 2016 is the additional deadline of meeting Standard 3.  New and existing day hospitals are required to meet compliance with AS/NZS 4187:2014 by December 2021.

Infrastructure Updates Required By Standard 3

Within Standards 3.10, 3.11, 3.12 and 3.14 there are numerous infrastructure updates required to meet the AS/NZS 4187:2014 by December 2021, irrespective of whether your facility is a new build for Commissioning or if it is required to undergo refurbishment.

Some specific infrastructure areas that you will need to consider when refurbishing your day hospital include:

  • Water quality - for processing of reusable medical devices in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions
  • Lighting – pull down lighting is used in operating theatres and should be used to provide appropriate magnification in other areas. e.g. CSD/SSU/CSSD.
  • Effective segregation of decontamination and clean areas. To maximise compliance with the standards, you need to make sure you have allocated enough space for this in your refurbishment plans.

Case Study

Recently the Premis Team modified an existing space to construct and commission a new operating theatre at Chermside Day Hospital.    A new HEPA filtered mechanical plant was installed to service the operating theatre with mechanical and electrical service upgrades required to ensure the theatre complied with the relevant standards.

The new multi-purpose theatre will facilitate the provision of endoscopies, dental surgeries, reconstructive and other procedures for patients.
