Premis Solutions recently completed building works to support a major architectural light installation by international light artist James Turrell.
Commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Turrell’s artwork will permanently illuminate the eastern and southern facades of GOMA with a shifting pattern of vibrant coloured light from sunset to midnight each day.
The light installation activates GOMA’s white box façade and realises one of the architect’s original design intentions with the building.
Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said “this is a major moment for the Gallery and our audiences, as we bring to life a permanent solid light installation that is a deeply immersive field of slowly changing colour.”
To support the lighting installation, Premis delivered a program of building works. This included the installation of platforms and ladders within the building’s southern cavity, construction of an operable wall system over three floor levels and construction and installation of light boxes to house the light fittings. The building’s existing electrical and fire services were also modified prior to testing and commissioning of the installation ready for handover to the artist.
This is the second project Premis has delivered for QAGOMA and we look forward to other opportunities to work with them in the future.
