Premis is nearing the completion of a multi-staged laboratory refurbishment project at Griffith University, Nathan Campus. The project involved the delivery of six scientific laboratories, a computer laboratory, an AV laboratory and a suite of offices under a construction management contract. Works were undertaken concurrently across four separate buildings, alongside existing classrooms and other university facilities occupied by staff and students.
Working in a live environment can be challenging at the best of times and on this project, the works schedule was staged to minimize the impact on other occupants of the buildings. The labs also required a very quick turnaround and were delivered in 6 weeks from start to finish, including relocation and custom joinery. The AVA labs were completed in 4 weeks and the computer labs took 6 weeks. The facilities were therefore inoperative for a very short amount of time.
The scientific laboratories – including the PC2 rated laboratories, chemical and analytical laboratories - required the coordination of a range of complex works to meet industry specifications. The scientific laboratories also featured chemical-resistant laminated custom benches, with recessed lighting in the PC2 laboratories to ensure infection control.
A key challenge of delivering the laboratories was the implementation of a custom flue exhaust. Scaffolding was required on the roof level (20-25m in the air) to install the specialised equipment, so all the air could be exhausted from the laboratory fume cupboards. A franna crane was also required to navigate between existing university buildings to lift the scaffolding materials for safe roof access.
The office space and seven laboratories have now been completed, with the final PC2 rated laboratory
due for completion in the last quarter of 2017.
