Can Hospitals Be Beautiful? (Part 1)

Most of us think of hospitals as places to get in and out of as quickly as possible. But what if a medical centre was so well designed that it made you actually you look forward to your procedure?

In a recent survey called The 25 Most Beautiful Hospitals In The World, the runner up was the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in the U.S. state of Michigan. This week we’ll take a look at this incredibly luxe facility with the winner starring in next week’s post.

Not only does the 191 bed hospital have a beautiful exterior and a high end shopping mall-like interior, but it’s also known for its use of natural light for heating and cooling, rainwater collection and filtration system and recycling programs. And this incredible atrium.

The hospital also has an onsite green house, the construction of which according to the hospital’s website, “was one of the first steps toward our goals of improving the wellness of our patients, ending childhood obesity and helping our community lead healthier lives.”

Run by the resident hospital farmer the Greenhouse is designed to promote the healing power of food and includes workshops, cooking classes, gardening programs, educational classes for children, patient therapy and a farmers market.

The rooms are, believe it or not, designed with quiet and a good night’s sleep in mind, not just for patients but family members too.
Next week we’ll visit the winner, the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego which comes complete with concierge service!
